Two Australian entrepreneurs, Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski, are setting out to tackle one of the biggest problems our oceans face: trash. As a surfer and sailor, Turton has seen exactly how bad the issue with garbage in our oceans can be, and he has seen it all around the world. That is what inspired him to team up with fellow surfer Ceglinski and create the Seabin.
Throughout his travels, Turton found a common problem area when it came to ocean pollution: the marinas. I mean think about, anywhere you have a collection of humans you are going to have a collection of garbage. Eventually, that garbage is either going to pile up and collect in the marinas, or make it’s way to open water.
That’s where the Seabin comes in. The Seabin is basically a floating trash can that collects garbage and oil in enclosed areas like marinas. According to the Seabin’s Indiegogo crowdfunding page, “The Seabin is located in the water and is fixed to a floating dock. There is a shore based water pump on the dock running on shore power. The water pump creates a flow of water into the bin bringing with it all floating rubbish and debris. The rubbish/debris is caught in a natural fiber catch bag and the water is then sucked out the bottom of the bin and up to the water pump where it is then pumped back into the marina.” This concept is perfect for enclosed areas like marinas because it works automatically and can be placed in problem areas like corners where the most trash gets collected.

Check out the following video that actually shows the Seabin hard at work, and check out the Indiegogo page for more information and ways to help. It’s just like Turton and Ceglinski say, when it comes to cleaning our oceans “It’s a big mission, but it can be done. In fact, we’re doing it right now.”
