Simple Things You can do Every Day to Make Yourself Smarter

make yourself smarter

Intelligence, as it is measured, is not a finite resource. Our brains have the capability to do amazing things and hold a vast wealth of knowledge. So why is it that most people reach a certain age and just quit learning? Sure, we learn little things like new recipes or crafty DIY projects from Pinterest, but what about acquiring real knowledge?

With access to new information being a basic part of life these days, it seems people are getting dumber, not smarter. Your brain is like a muscle: the more you use it the stronger and more efficient it gets. Just like sitting on a couch doesn’t help you lose weight, not using your brain doesn’t help you get smarter. Here are 6 tips to help you gain knowledge and increase your intelligence. After all, intelligence is sexy!

1. Keep Learning, and Keep Track of What you Learn
There are thousands of websites dedicated to learning new skills and languages. The key here is, just like you’d keep track of your progress in a gym or on a track, keeping track of what you’ve learned. The practice of tracking what you learn makes your results tangible. You don’t need to write a thesis paper everytime you read an interesting article, but at the end of the week having a list of things to look back on that you’ve learned can be rewarding.

2. Use the Internet Wisely
Yes, I love cat videos as much as the next person, but downtime on the internet can be so much more fulfilling. With online series like the Ted Talks and resources like EdX – where you can take free online courses from universities around the country, your options for VALUABLE internet conten is limitless.

3. Hang Out with Smarter People
Epictetus, a Greek philosopher, once said “The key is to keep company only with people who uplift you, whose presence calls forth your best.” That statement ring truest when you consider the people around you and the influences they have on your brain.

4. Read More
There are dozens of reasons why people should read more. On top of the benefits of reading for your mind, body, and soul – again, there are countless online resources for free books.

5. Relax
Again, sticking to the theory that you brain is like a muscle, it needs rest. This is especially true if you lead a hectic lifestyle. Now, I am not just talking about sleep – but times throughout the day when you can clear your head, and recharge your brain’s batteries. Things like meditation or exercise can go a long way to letting your brain cool down and reboot.
