Whether you are trying to sell something, motivate people, or just trying to get your kids to go to bed on time – the influence you have over people is critical for success. You can be authoritative and charismatic but if you people aren’t truly influenced by what you have to say, your words will go in one ear and out the other. Focus on Your Body Language

The science of body language is fascinating. Again, it’s not what you say but how your body says it. Ask for a Favor

There is something about asking for a favor as opposed to asking someone do something. Asking for a “favor” makes the request personal. It’s like asking for help as opposed to telling someone what to do. Even when it is something that the person is supposed to be doing anyway.

Tell A Story

Telling a story as opposed to just spewing facts is a way to personalize your point of view. A story is an intimate expression of an experience. For instance, instead of trying to sell someone something by just rattling off features and specs, tell a story about how one of the features played a part in something you did. Make the situation personal, and you’ll get a more personal response.

Don’t be Afraid to Show Vulnerability

Normally you wouldn’t bring vulnerabilities like emotional responses into a business conversation, but you’d be amazed by the impact it can have on people. Just like a story can personalize a situation, being vulnerable make you more human. People identify with emotional responses. Making that kind of connection has a greater impact on people than someone who is cold and calloused.
