Who better to design a new type of condom than a group of teenagers? Especially if that condom is designed to detect sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia, herpes, HPV, or even syphilis.
The condom, which is being cleverly dubbed the “S.T.EYE”, is designed to react to the specific pathogens that cause common sexually transmitted infections. The team explained that once developed, the S.T.EYE would glow green for chlamydia, yellow for herpes, purple for human papillomavirus or blue for syphilis. According to 14-year-old Daanyaal Ali, one of the inventors, “We wanted to make something that makes detecting harmful STIs safer than ever before, so that people can take immediate action in the privacy of their own homes without the invasive procedures at the doctors. We created the S.T.EYE as a new way for STI detection to help the future of the next generation. We’ve made sure we’re able to give peace of mind to users and make sure people can be even more responsible than ever before.”
The S.T.EYE has won the Teen Tech Award for best health innovation, and will hopefully be moving from the conceptual stage into actual development. The concept behind the idea is brilliant in my opinion, even if it is a little like having a bullet proof vest that tells you when there is a gun present only after you’ve been shot. Still, it is a step in the right direction for the prevention of STI’s. Also, I have to imagine that the S.T.EYE would make for some interesting pillow talk…”Um…Why am I glowing Green?”
